Kestrel vs Apple Mail
Apple Mail comes with every Mac, iPhone and iPad. It sets up iCloud, Google, Exchange and Yahoo accounts from an address and password, and takes any other provider over IMAP or POP. Apple Intelligence adds summaries, Priority Messages and Smart Reply on Macs with M1 or later. Kestrel is a separate app for Gmail and IMAP accounts, built around the keyboard. Every action has a key, and the inbox splits into Important and Other.

Keys
In Apple Mail, shortcuts belong to menu commands and mostly use ⌘ or ⌃, such as ⌃⌘A to archive. You can add your own in System Settings for any command in the menus.
In Kestrel every action has a key, most of them a single letter: E marks done, H sets a reminder, # trashes. ⌘K searches every action and folder by name and shows each one's key, and a practice inbox teaches the first ones.
Inbox and calendar
Kestrel splits the inbox into Important and Other, plus splits of your own written as searches, and shows Google Calendar next to your mail, with booking pages through an optional team server.
Price and accounts
Apple Mail is free and takes Exchange and POP accounts. Kestrel takes Gmail and IMAP accounts only, and costs $20 a year for up to 3 Macs, with a free demo inbox to try first.
